Offshore Players Drive Desktop Prices to New Lows
By David Perara, Managing Consultant, ProBenchmark

In recent deal pricing, ProBenchmark has seen pricing per desktop, inclusive of IMAC activity, as low as $20 to $24/month per supported device. Using ProBenchmark's Full Service Desktop Configuration a U.S .onshore solution price ranges from $54 to $70 according to our models. What can explain this huge gap in pricing? We believe four primary forces have converged to bring desktop prices to new lows:

  • The global economic slowdown
  • The trend to disaggregate service components
  • The convergence of increased competition in the U.S. from the entry of aggressive offshore players
  • The ability to remotely resolve desktop problems using remote infrastructure management (RIM)
ProBenchmark believes the global economic slowdown and increased competition in the US will diminish in the next year. Therefore, technology and process improvements will continue to impact desktop pricing with less aggressive price decreases in the next year.

Buyer Beware
Buyers of desktop services must be cautious to ensure the prices compared are for similar configurations. A Full Service Desktop Configuration includes asset management, software break/fix, problem resolution (Tier 2), LAN administration, email, premise network, system monitoring tools, H/W maintenance, file and printer servers/devices, and IMAC.
